Going Green in Dunleer: Your Guide to the Deposit Return Scheme

Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), operated by Re-turn, is a nationwide money-back initiative for plastic bottles and aluminium cans that aims to boost recycling rates, tackle litter, and drive a circular economy. As of 1 February 2024, consumers in Dunleer and across the country will pay a small deposit in addition to the price of the drink when purchasing beverages in plastic bottles or aluminium cans with the Re-turn logo. When they return their empty, undamaged drinks containers to any participating retail outlet, they will receive their deposit back in full.

In Dunleer, two retail outlets—Centra Dunleer and Spar Dunleer—have installed Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) to automate the deposit return process.

Participants who return their bottles to the machines in Dunleer under Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme will receive a refund of their deposit instantly. The scheme involves a deposit of 15c for containers ranging from 150ml to 500ml and a deposit of 25c for containers between 500ml and 3 liters. This means that individuals returning their empty, undamaged containers to the Reverse Vending Machines at Centra and Spar will receive their deposit back in full, encouraging active participation in recycling efforts within the community.

How much do I have to pay?

The deposit is 15c on bottles and cans from 150ml to 500ml inclusive and 25c for containers over 500ml and up to 3 litres.

Can I receive cash instead of using the voucher at the shop?

Yes, Re-turn allows the conversion of the voucher issued by the DRS machine into cash at the till or its utilization within the issuing store.

Can I return bottles not purchased in the store with the RVM (Return Vending Machine)?

Yes, you can return bottles purchased elsewhere to the RVM. However, keep in mind that the money-back voucher can only be redeemed in the store housing the RVM.

How do I retrieve my deposit?

Empty containers can be returned to any participating shop. If equipped with a reverse vending machine, simply insert the container into the designated slot to receive a voucher, which can be redeemed for cash or deducted from a purchase.

Can I accumulate vouchers for later use?

Vouchers are redeemable only at the shop of issue and cannot be utilized across different branches of a chain.

Should I flatten the container?

No, containers should remain intact to ensure the barcode can be read by the machine, facilitating the refund process.

Do I need to rinse the container?

While rinsing is ideal, emptying the container is the priority. Containers with liquid residue may be rejected by the machine.

Can I return containers for non-beverage products?

No, the scheme is exclusive to beverage containers and excludes other liquid products due to differing barcode requirements and materials.
